How to Photograph Small Bathrooms Without Distortion

Bathrooms are small, bright and full of mirrors. A few habits keep them clean, straight and free of reflections.

Prepare the room

  • Close the toilet lid.
  • Remove bottles, razors, toothbrushes and bath mats.
  • Hang one set of neatly folded towels.
  • Clean the mirror and glass shower screen; streaks show in every photo.

Choosing the angle

In small bathrooms, a one-point view from the doorway, square to the vanity or the bath, is often the cleanest. In larger bathrooms, a corner angle shows the layout better. Avoid the widest lens settings; they stretch basins and bend the edges of the frame.

Beat the mirror

Mirrors show the camera and the photographer. Shoot at an angle to the mirror, step to one side so you are out of its line, or use the camera's timer and leave the room. Small reflections can be removed in editing, but a big camera in the middle of a mirror is hard to rebuild convincingly.

Light

Turn on the vanity lights and bracket the exposures. White tiles and fixtures reflect a lot of light, so check that the brightest frame does not wash out the white surfaces.

Key takeaways

  • Toilet lid down, counters clear, one set of towels.
  • One-point view from the door for small rooms.
  • Shoot at an angle to mirrors to stay out of them.
  • Vanity lights on and brackets for bright tiles.

Common questions

How do I photograph a small bathroom?

Shoot a one-point view from the doorway, square to the vanity or the bath, with the camera level. Avoid the widest lens settings, which stretch the basin and bend the edges of the frame.

How do I keep myself out of the bathroom mirror?

Shoot at an angle to the mirror, step out of its line, or use the timer and leave the room. Small reflections can be removed in editing.

Should the toilet be in the photo?

It is fine if it is part of the room, with the lid closed. Frame so the vanity, shower or bath is the main subject, not the toilet.
